TEAR RESISTANCE

Paragliding maintenance Colombia

Just as the fabric of the Paraglider, which loses the ability to prevent the passage of air through it with use, also reduces the resistance to tearing, this means that the fabric becomes less resistant.

It is possible that, even with a good porosity test result, the fabric is weakened and fails the break test.

Causes of fabric degradation and what to avoid:

-Excessive UV exposure
-Storage or exposure to high temperatures
-Contact with corrosive agents

-Cleaning the glider with detergents

Some manufacturers claim that it only takes a few hours of heat inside a car to degrade the strength of a glider's fabric to an inadmissible point.

To do this test, we use a device called a Bettsometer, which is a dynamometer with a needle on the end. Its function is to determine with how much load the fabric is torn, the results are compared with the data offered by the manufacturer and it is determined if the Paraglider is airworthy or should be discarded.

Only a small 1mm hole is made in different points of the Paraglider, it is subjected to tension until the load specified by the manufacturer is reached and the test stops there. If the fabric is torn before the specified load, the glider will not be suitable for flight, if it passes the test, the only damage to the equipment is a negligible hole which is sealed with a small patch of Ripstop Tape.

The consequences of having weakened equipment can be serious, because when collapses occur, the reopening is aggressive and explosive, to the point where, if the fabric is badly degraded, the glider can break in two, which, if it happens at low altitude, it can be fatal.

Periodically check your Paraglider, remember that your safety is the number one priority.

All our services include a maintenance certificate that is delivered when the equipment is returned to the customer, where you can see the information on the service performed, observations, and advice if necessary.

With this certificate, the resale value of the equipment also increases because the Client will sell the Paraglider in optimal condition.
